Just as Storm Claudia swept through the northwest the night before, the home side blew the visitors aside at the Etihad Stadium. It was a statement 3-0 victory for the City coach's side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a display that truly announced their leadership claims as they consolidated their standing at the WSL pinnacle.

Successive Losses for United

This result marked consecutive league setbacks for Skinner's side for the first time since spring 2024, placing them a significant margin off the table toppers with their trophy ambitions in serious doubt.

The Red Devils' capability to juggle league and continental football with a limited team has been a frequently analyzed subject since they earned a place in the European competition. Reviewing the calendar, it always felt like this was the week that would seriously challenge this capability. Regrettably for the visitors, they seemed fatigued all game, the memorable win against the French side clearly having left its mark.

Tactical Shifts

Marc Skinner had attempted to make changes with a handful of adjustments. Ella Toone, Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all brought freshness, although the omission of the high-performing Melvine Malard to the bench caused surprise.

City, in contrast, have fewer loading issues. Jeglertz made a single alteration from the previous win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her initial starting appearance since returning from injury.

Dominant First Half

The trouble started to gather for the United boss and his squad from the opening minute. This was a demonstration of the power from City whose dynamic forward line manipulated and pulled the visitors apart with a sublime initial 45 minutes performance that saw them put three past the keeper in just over twenty minutes.

Opening Threats

The warning signs came soon when Vivianne Miedema used her power to push Zigiotti off the ball, only to drag her shot off target. They increased their advantage with two more goals just before the break. When Rose was permitted to maraud through the middle from defense, the play opened up for City. The key Kerstin Casparij picked the ball up on the wing before sending a pinpoint driven ball for Bunny Shaw to bundle home. A short time later, they had a third goal after a rapid turnover in possession saw Hemp afforded the opportunity to strike a shot home from distance.

After the Break

The most obvious substitution came from Skinner at the interval as Melvine Malard entered for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was too late to change the course of the match. Ex- City player Jess Park came nearest, striking the woodwork, but the away team were lacking in ideas and did not manage to register a single shot on target.

The home side, in contrast, could have added to their lead when a superb Vivianne Miedema long ball sent Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it was insignificant to the winning team. Previously unable to defeat any side who placed above them the previous campaign, the manager's side now have wins against the Gunners and Manchester United to position them in a strong standing after nine matches.
