India's capital Awakens to Dangerous Smog After Festival of Lights

On Tuesday morning inhabitants of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with exposed to severely hazardous air that registered in the "alarming" category.

Extremely High Pollution Measurements

Various sections of the capital showed an AQI exceeding 500, which translates to 10x the recommended limit established by the WHO.

In some locations, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of 1800, equating to fifteen to twenty times exceeding acceptable standards.

Firecracker Ban and New Policy Shifts

Beginning in 2020, officials had enforced a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the dangerous haze that engulfs the metropolis as colder weather sets in.

Nevertheless recently, the current regional leadership petitioned the highest court to seek a modification of the prohibition.

The suggestion was allowing "green crackers" – historically criticized by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third lower impact – as a balance between "cultural practices and public health".

Judicial Verdict and Implementation

Much to the frustration of medical and ecological advocates, judges agreed to the appeal, specifying that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be set off during limited hours throughout the celebrations.

On Monday night, there was widespread violation of the time restrictions across the metropolis, with insufficient enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the more environmentally friendly version.

Several recording stations throughout Delhi recorded contamination reaching highest levels around late evening to the most severe levels recorded during the festival in at least the past three years.

Regional Consequences

The proliferation of firecrackers during Diwali also triggered a dispute with neighbouring the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab pointing to deteriorating atmospheric conditions in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles coming from across the border following the festivities.

Long-Standing Environmental Problem

Alarmingly severe levels of atmospheric toxins in Delhi have remained as a major challenge for more than 15 years, with the situation gradually deteriorating.

During celebratory seasons, the levels of toxic particulate matter in the air has been observed to spike to 70% higher the most severe records ever measured in Beijing, which was once viewed as the globally most contaminated urban center.

Diverse Contamination Contributors

The problem in the city is caused by a mix of multiple factors including heavy vehicle emissions, construction debris, construction activities, waste incineration and haze from crop residue ignition in neighbouring states of farming communities.

Throughout these areas, rural residents regularly ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, creating toxic smog that then gets trapped over the capital as winter air sets in.

Public Health and Financial Toll

The economic and health impact on the approximately 33 million inhabitants calling home the Delhi area is enormous, according to numerous investigations.

This pollution results in increased incidence of neurological, heart and circulatory and respiratory diseases, and can even lead to oncological diseases.

Air quality crisis is calculated to be accounting for ten thousand premature fatalities each year in the city.
