The mood at Lazio's home ground was far from happy on Saturday afternoon. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had conceded a total of 10 goals while managing only two goals in their most recent five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.
The Campaign Coming Unstitched?
Was the team's progress unraveling, or was there ever a thread maintaining its structure in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, before he publicly stated that the management had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were facing for financial irregularities. Speculation that he might quit were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.
The Roman club were just as chaotic on the pitch as they were off it, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other initial five matches, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to determine if they're getting better or self-destructing.
The Youngster's Unexpected Comeback
At least one man kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio this year. He completed the last one with Parma on loan and, early this summer, Lazio were pushing for him to extend his stay temporarily. The signing restriction forced a rethink. They were unable to weaken their team with no new signings.
He joined in the first place when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances for Lazio in 2022-23, almost all of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."
Uncovering His Natural Fit
Maybe Sarri was still trying to determine the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
